California officials must quickly confront a re-write of state policy in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday that supporting families that wish to opt their children out of lessons with LGBTQ+ characters and pro-LGBTQ+ themes.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule on Friday in a bid by Christian and Muslim parents in Maryland to keep their elementary school children out of certain classes when storybooks with LGBT characters are read in the latest case involving the intersection of religion and LGBT rights.

The case had set up a clash between parents’ ability to direct their children’s education and schools’ authority over classroom material.
