Java 8, unveiled last year, introduced a functional style to Java with lambda support. Tiobe also said that Java’s use in Android mobile application development has boosted its popularity.

Java ranked fourth in the December 2022 Tiobe index of programming language popularity, the lowest Java has ranked in the history of the index.

It was never the sexiest language, but for decades Java has been a mainstay of modern technology, and it's going to be with us for years to come.
