Microsoft’s new C# Dev Kit extension for Visual Studio Code turns the programmer’s editor into a complete development environment for .NET.

The C# extension provides language services, while the C# Dev Kit extension builds on the Visual Studio foundation for solution management, templates and debugging testing.

Microsoft announced the preview release of C# Dev Kit, a new extension for Visual Studio Code intended to improve the C# development experience on Linux, macOS, Windows and more.

This means that it's free for individuals, academic users, and open-source developers, under the same terms as the Visual Studio community edition.

In the third preview of Visual Studio 17.5, Microsoft added spell-checking functionality for C#, C++, and Markdown files. If you correct any identifiers it will auto-refactor your code.

C# Dev Kit, a Visual Studio Code extension for “editor first” C# development, has reached general availability, Microsoft announced on October 4.
