The thought of the top men’s and women’s singles players teaming up is one that has often intrigued tennis fans around the world.
Is sports a competition or entertainment? Obviously it’s a little of both, but where organizations draw the line is always interesting. That’s why the U.S. Open Tennis Championships’ experiment with its mixed doubles format is so compelling.
A ten-point championship tiebreak will be played if the pairs are level at one set all. The winning pair will receive $1million (£736,880), while the beaten finalists will take home $400,000 (£294,729). Semi-finalists will receive $200,000 (£147,364), and those that make it to the last eight will pocket $100,000 (£73,682).
The new event wanted to use singles stars to put mixed doubles on a pedestal. Two masters of the discipline have stolen the show.
