髄膜炎は、脳と脊髄を覆う保護膜の感染症で、迅速な治療を行わないと重篤化する可能性があるという。ただ、ウイルス性髄膜炎は、より稀な細菌性髄膜炎よりは軽度とされており、7～10日ほどで自然に治ることも多いそう。

スペイン女子代表MFアイタナ・ボンマティが、ウイルス性髄膜炎により入院していることが明かされた。27日にスペインサッカー連盟（RFEF）などが発表した。
