Indian officials have said they would keep purchasing oil from Russia despite the threat of penalties that U.S. President Donald Trump said he would impose, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

The president also touted agreements over hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign investment into the United States.

India and the US have held several rounds of negotiations for a trade deal over the past few months, with Delhi even reducing tariffs on goods like Bourbon whiskey and motorcycles to placate the US. But the US runs a $45bn (£33bn) trade deficit with India, which Trump is keen to reduce.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and President Trump took swings at India as a tariff deadline nears for the country. “India came to the table early. They’ve been slow rolling things,” Bessent said Thursday during an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.
