Official Lebanese media has reported Israeli strikes on south Beirut, shortly after calls by Israel's army for residents to evacuate the Hezbollah stronghold - repeatedly bombarded for several days.

The Israeli military has said it had targeted Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs in an attack that shook the Lebanese capital and sent thick clouds of smoke over the city.

Israel launched airstrikes across southern Lebanon, targeting alleged Hezbollah military infrastructure in at least eight locations.

It marked the fourth Israeli air strike this week targeting a central area of Beirut, in contrast to the bulk of Israel’s attacks that have targeted the Hizbullah -controlled southern suburbs.

Earlier, Israeli jets struck at least six buildings in Beirut’s southern suburbs. One strike hit near the country’s only airport, sending plumes of smoke into the sky.
