JOHANNESBURG (AP) — U.S. reciprocal tariffs have put an estimated 30,000 jobs at risk, South African authorities said Monday, four days before a 30% U.S. tariff on most imports from South Africa kicks in.

South Africa’s government is putting the final touches to an overarching package that aims to shield businesses against the fallout from punitive US trade tariffs and plans to present it to lawmakers later this week.

President Donald Trump’s expanded reciprocal tariffs will not apply to any products loaded onto a vessel for transport into the United States before 12:01 a.m. New York time on Thursday, according to guidance issued by US Customs and Border Protection.

The tariffs span a wide range with several countries being hit with a 15% levy, while others like Laos and Brazil are seeing higher rates at 40% and 50%, respectively. (Trump has cited Brazil’s treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro among his reasons for the higher import tax on the country’s goods.

President Trump is using an “Art of the Deal” approach to get other nations to hand over cash to lower their tariffs.

"There could be a distribution or a dividend to the people of our country, I would say for people that would be middle income people and lower income people, we could do a dividend," Trump told reporters before boarding Air Force One after leaving his golf club in New Jersey.
